Fans of The Walking Dead: Dead City finally have a clearer idea of where the series stands after Season 3 — although the news stops just short of the announcement many viewers have been waiting for.

Scott M. Gimple, chief content officer of The Walking Dead universe and an executive producer on Dead City, recently addressed the possibility of a fourth season. Speaking to The Direct at MultiCon 2026, Gimple said the series has a strong chance of continuing because it has been performing well and viewers appear to be responding positively.

At the same time, he made it clear that nothing is guaranteed in the current television landscape. That distinction is important: Season 4 has not been officially ordered by AMC as of October 2, 2026. So while the latest comments are encouraging, they should not be treated as an official renewal announcement.

Scott Gimple Says Dead City Has a “Good Shot”

Asked about the future of the Maggie and Negan-led series, Gimple pointed to its performance and audience response as reasons for optimism.

He said he hopes fans will continue to hold out hope and added that the show has a “good shot” at moving forward.

However, Gimple also added an important qualification: television is operating in a very different environment now than it was during the peak years of the original Walking Dead.

In the traditional cable era, ratings made it somewhat easier to estimate whether a successful show would continue. Today, streaming numbers, production costs, international value, subscriber engagement and other business considerations can all play a role in a renewal decision. That may help explain why AMC has not yet rushed into announcing Season 4, even after a season that has generated renewed interest in the spin-off.

Season 3 Left Plenty of Room for the Story to Continue

Season 3 premiered on July 26, 2026, on AMC and AMC+, with Lauren Cohan returning as Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan reprising his role as Negan.

The season continued the complicated story between the two characters while pushing them into a new stage of their relationship. Their history remains one of the central parts of the series, but Season 3 also opened the door to a broader story involving their community and the future of post-apocalyptic New York.

The finale did not close the door on Maggie and Negan. Instead, it left enough unresolved material for the series to continue naturally.

That makes the lack of an immediate Season 4 announcement more noticeable. From a story perspective, Dead City still has room to keep going.

Why AMC May Be Taking Its Time

The uncertainty surrounding Dead City appears to be part of a broader shift in how The Walking Dead franchise is being handled.

Gimple has indicated that future projects may arrive at a slower pace rather than following the aggressive release schedule fans became accustomed to during the franchise’s busiest years.

That creates an unusual moment for the franchise. The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live was designed as a limited series, while The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is moving toward its final stretch. That leaves Dead City as one of the biggest open questions concerning the franchise’s longer-term television future.

A Season 4 renewal would give AMC another continuing series built around two of the franchise’s best-known characters while also leaving room for the wider universe to evolve.

The Latest Update Is Good News — Just Not a Renewal

For fans seeing headlines suggesting that Season 4 has already been confirmed, the safest reading of the situation is simple: the outlook is encouraging, but AMC has not made the final call publicly.

Gimple’s comments matter because they come from one of the central creative figures behind the franchise. His statement that Dead City is performing well gives fans a legitimate reason to remain optimistic.

But until AMC issues a formal renewal announcement, Season 4 remains unconfirmed.

That is also the key difference between the latest reports and an actual greenlight. The Direct provided the original interview update, while Digital Spy and Undead Walking covered what the comments could mean for the future of the series and the larger franchise.

What Could Happen in Dead City Season 4?

If AMC does bring the series back, Season 4 would have an opportunity to explore the new status quo created during Season 3 instead of simply returning to the same Maggie-versus-Negan dynamic.

Their complicated history will always remain part of Dead City, but the recent season gave both characters reasons to look beyond their old conflict and focus on the survival of a larger community.

The New York setting also gives the writers plenty of room to expand the story. Manhattan has always been central to the identity of the spin-off, but a future season could explore new areas, new survivor groups and new threats.

For now, however, any specific Season 4 storyline would be speculation.

When Will AMC Announce Dead City Season 4?

There is currently no confirmed announcement date.

The most meaningful signal will be an official statement from AMC or AMC Networks. Until that happens, reports about a renewal should be treated as speculation unless they are backed by a formal network announcement.

Still, Gimple’s latest comments make the situation more positive than complete silence. The people running The Walking Dead universe clearly have not publicly declared Maggie and Negan’s story finished.

For Dead City fans, that may not be the confirmation they wanted — but it is a strong indication that another trip into the undead streets of New York remains possible.
